Custom Research Examples

Our company has a long history of providing custom research for clients. These custom projects have ranged anywhere from a few hours research to determine additional market or forecasts splits, to full-blown custom reports analyzing targeted technologies or market opportunities. Listed below are a few examples to demonstrate the type of projects that we have successfully undertaken.

Custom example #1

Client: Global telecommunications corporation providing hardware, software and services to operators, enterprises and governments

Project length: 4 weeks

Overview: The client requested detailed analysis on revenue generated by their potential partner’s MHEG-5 (ISO/IEC 13522-5) compliant iDTVs in the United Kingdom, Italy, Germany, France, US, and Japan. This analysis required a very quick turn around and was key to their decision making process.

Deliverables: A concise report of 44 pages was delivered to the client on time. This report contained all analysis used to calculate MHEG-5 compliant iDTV revenues in the proposed countries. Additional analysis on the outlook for MHEG-5 compliant iDTVs was also included for the next five years along with all other relevant data that IMS Research collected during the course of the study. Additional tables were also provided as supplementary data on TV households and operators for each country featured. These complimentary tables allowed the client to produce additional analysis beyond the scope of the requested report.

Custom example #2

Client: Tier 1 Japanese mobile network operator

Project length: 12 months

Overview: The client was a dominant player in the Japanese mobile market with a history of investing in cutting-edge technologies. The company wanted to get a new perspective on the global cellular industry and contracted with IMS Research to track the latest cellular technology and mobile services trends.

Deliverables: IMS Research provided two distinct deliverables. The first was a monthly overview of recent industry developments related to 21 different industry topics. These included subjects such as mobile handset operating systems, virtualization, security, device management, and enterprise applications among others. A total of 12 Phase I reports were completed for this project with each report being approximately 50 pages in length.

The second deliverable was a series of in-depth reports focusing on targeted areas in the mobile space, for example mobile handset input-output technologies. The research for these in-depth reports included primary research in the form of interviews with key companies, in addition to extensive secondary research. A total of eight reports were completed, with each report averaging 60-70 pages in length. The reports included the following:

  • Brief history of the evolution of the technology/service
  • Current status of the technology/service, and its applications
  • Competing technologies/services, including a comparative analysis
  • Latest trends associated with the technology/service, and their likely implications
  • Related standards and legislation, and their likely impact
  • Estimates of current market size, split by geographic region
  • Forecasts and analysis of market growth for next 5+ years
  • Industry structure, including competitive analysis of key players, details of collaborative and joint ventures, etc
  • Pricing and cost trends
  • Outline profiles of the major participants in the market
  • Evaluation of the likelihood of major new entrants to the market
  • Defined and projected product plans of the major players (around 3 to 5) (as available)
  • Directory of major participants in the market

After each of the Phase 2 reports was completed, IMS Research held a conference call with the client and presented an overview of the results.

Custom example #3

Client: A global leader in the manufacture of televisions and mobile phones

Project length: 2 months

Overview: The client’s objective for this research was to identify whether or not its current US model for VOD and online music downloads could be successful in Europe (specifically in the UK, France, Germany, Spain, Italy and the Netherlands). This success was contingent on consumer’s willingness to utilize such a service and the identification of strategic partners.

Deliverables: A report of approximately 50 pages containing a mix of Excel tables, PowerPoint slides and written text covering the results of the research on the UK, France and Germany was delivered in PDF format along with the original Excel, PowerPoint and Word documents. This report provided broadband penetration by country, VOD market sizing, level of competition for suppliers and operators, channel lead times, consumption behavior, consumer awareness levels, regional expansion plans, financial status and supply chain analysis. In addition, multiple scenarios were presented along with a strategic recommendation by IMS Research. The final presentation was delivered by IMS Research in the client’s headquarters.

Custom example #4

Client: A leading developer of SOC solutions for LCD and PDP televisions

Project length: 6 weeks

Overview: The client and its investment banking advisor required an analyst team with knowledge of the set-top box core chip market to assist them in estimating the potential revenues of an acquisition target. Specifically, the client asked for:

  • Delivery of a syndicated report on the set-top box market
  • Analyst assistance to prepare questions for the acquisition target
  • Analyst attendance at meetings with the acquisition target, which occurred on relatively short notice
  • Validation & verification of acquisition target’s design
  • An estimate of the acquisition target’s revenue and volume performance
  • Delivery of preliminary estimates of acquisition target volume and revenue within 4 weeks of project commencement
  • Delivery of final report on acquisition target volume and revenue within 6 weeks of project commencement

Deliverables: IMS Research delivered its findings in the form of Excel tables plus a brief written summary providing an estimate of the revenue and volume projections of the acquisition target based on overall market dynamics, plus actual and projected design wins. The data for this analysis used a combination of IMS Research’s extensive in-house databases, data on the acquisition target from the client, plus verification interviews with OEMs and operators where appropriate.

Custom example #5

Client: Global technology leader in developing, integrating, and manufacturing electronics packaging solutions for consumer electronics.

Project length: 5 months

Overview: The client was highly successful utilizing a proprietary process to penetrate a specific market segment (smartphones). The company was interested in diversifying its client base by expanding into new market segments. IMS research was contracted to assist the client in identifying new market opportunities.

Deliverables: The project involved three distinct phases – in the first phase, IMS Research spent several days on-site with the client to gain a thorough understanding of the company’s core values, technology solutions, manufacturing capabilities, and value proposition. A broad cross-section of IMS industry experts was then assembled to brainstorm a list of potential market opportunities. This initial list was evaluated against a series of key criteria which were chosen by IMS Research in collaboration with the client. The initial list of 50+ markets was narrowed down to 5 through a series of iterative reviews.

In the second phase, IMS Research provided an overview with key metrics for each of the 5 potential markets including SAM, TAM, market value, and key players among others. IMS Research worked with the client to identify the key companies in each market.

TThe third phase of the project involved extensive primary and secondary research for each target market, including interviews conducted with each key company. IMS Research then produced a final 300 page report which was specifically focused on the market opportunities for the client. This report was ultimately used as part of the strategic planning process for the client.
